Fragments of the spacecraft ionized the thin air that they passed through. The streaks in the sky over east Texas that morning were essentially meteoric effects resulting from Columbia's speed - about Mach 15 - and its 40-mile altitude. But in the end it is usually the softness of humans, and not the hardness of space, that is to blame. If we relax from relentless vigilance, spaceflight will kill, and has killed. In such a culture, disasters were not accidental, but inevitable.įormer NASA Administrator Mike Griffin often pointed out that spaceflight is so very difficult that humans can handle the hazards only if they're at their best. The disaster was a consequence of that flaw, not of the essential and unavoidable nature of spaceflight. The biggest misconception is what I call "Myth Zero." This pernicious and poisonous myth is that the disaster was an "accident" - suggesting that it was caused by factors beyond human control, and was just one of those things that should be expected and tolerated on the space frontier.Īs investigators later determined - and as some experienced safety analysts warned beforehand - the root cause was a series of bad decisions made by people who ignored traditional and time-tested strict safety standards. This is a continuation of earlier myth-busting work by others. But for those who want to help themselves, and others around them, to stick to the facts, in tribute to the fallen, I've composed my own list of myths - some harmless, some not so much.

How to count this?įor example, we also count the eighth rest in the same way we count the eighth note: Therefore, two eighth rests equal one quarter note, just the same as two eighth notes. An eighth rest lasts for one-half of one beat. Eighth restĪn eighth rest on sheet music resembles a stylized ‘7’ and is analogous to an eighth note. But, how do we use music rest symbols to measure a smaller value of time? We use an eighth rest and a sixteenth rest to notate a smaller pause in sheet music. So far, we have learned how to measure pauses in larger durations. Go to the lesson Smaller lengths of time in notation For example, you will never see rests tied together in a piece of music to increase the number of beats you play. One major difference between notes and rests is that you will often see notes nights together to increase their length. Like the whole note, the whole rest lasts for a length of four beats in a 4/4 time signature. Whole rests are analogous to whole notes. These rests hang down from the fourth line of the staff and likewise measures half the length of the fourth space. The whole rest or semibreve rest is also a rectangular musical shape. The whole rest or semibreve rest looks like this: You can learn about this and much more with online piano lessons from Skoove. The combination of a quarter rest and half rest is most frequently used to measure the length of three beats, instead of dotted rests. You might occasionally see a dotted quarter rest, but you will almost never see dotted half rests like you see a dotted half note. Fermatas are often seen at the end of a musical piece. It might seem intuitive that we would use dotted rest notes in the same way we use dotted notes. Hold the note for as long as the musician or conductor deems appropriate, usually at least twice the beat value of the note. If a repeat sign is seen at the end of the music, go back to the beginning and play it again. Instructs you to repeat sections of music. To rapidly play two notes back and forth, the written note and usually the note above it. For a violinist, it means to lift the bow. This symbols tells a performer to take a breath. Play or sing the note forcefully with emphasis.Īlso called a slur, this symbol indicates you should smoothly connect a group of notes. Play or sing the note in a detached manner, with clear separation between notes. When the treble and bass clef staffs are connected by a brace, this is called the grand staff.Ī sharp symbol in front of a note directs you to play or sing that note one half step higher for the duration of the measure.Ī flat in front of a note directs you to play or sing that note one half step lower for the duration of the measure.Ī natural sign in front of a note cancels out a previous flat or a sharp in a measure.Ī glissando mark between two notes tells you to quickly slide your fingers up or down the keys or strings between those notes, starting and ending on the written notes. Indicates a time signature of 2/2 (two beats per measure, half note gets one beat). This symbol indicates a time signature of 4/4 (four beats per measure, quarter note gets one beat). This means there are six beats per measure and an eighth note gets one beat. The example to the left shows a time signature of 6/8. The top number of the time signature tells how many beats are in each measure, while the bottom number determines what type of note gets one beat. The number of sharps or flats at the beginning of a musical piece that determines what key to play or sing in.ĭetermines the beat or rhythm of the musical piece. Each line and space represents a note on the musical scale.Ī bar line divides the musical staff into measures.Īlso called the "G" clef, this symbol is found at the beginning of a music staff and represents treble notes.Īlso called the "F" clef, this symbol is found at the beginning of a music staff and represents bass notes. Notes are written on the lines, in the spaces and above and below the staff. It does not have a specific beat value but is played rapidly prior to a valued note's beat.Īlso called an arpeggio, a broken chord symbol means to play the notes of the chord separate (from bottom to top) instead of at the same time.Ĭonsists of five lines and four spaces. Triplets divide one beat into three equal beats.Ī grace note is an extra note added for flare and is not a necessary part of a music composition. Tied notes should be played as a single note and held for the length of their combined beats. This makes the notes easier to read and helps organize the music.Ī tie connects two or more notes and their beat values together. For example, a dotted half note equals three beats.Įighth, sixteenth, thirty-second, and sixty-fourth notes may be connected in groups by a beam. Add half the beat value of the note or rest. I am a Titanium member with another hotel brand, but I must immediate the staff at the Hotel Indigo will have me searching their brand as the place to stay whenever we travel again. She certainly represented the Hotel Indigo and the IHG brand in a manner that I hope makes them proud. She was friendly, engaging and most of all a true professional. We interacted with Kelli at the front desk numerous times, and I cannot use enough positive words to describe how wonderful she was. The hotel rooms were wonderful, and the staff was incredible. We stayed at the Hotel Indigo in Naperville at the end of March, and it was an outstanding experience, we had moved home to Texas after living in Naperville for 25 years and we knew the Hotel Indigo was going to be the place to stay. Overall, a good experience at this hotel with just a few minor tweaks needed but would definitely stay here again if needed to stay in this area. I also used the fitness center, which I was told is open 24/7, on both nights.their machines worked well, there was fresh water to drink and towels to use, and a great giant wall of windows for a view outside. I was able to order dinner from two very close restaurants within walking distance and eat lunch under a tree in the shade each day at the Riverwalk as this hotel is in the perfect location of downtown Naperville and the Riverwalk. The bed was quite comfortable I slept mostly peacefully all night with the exception of the growling sound that came from the nearby fridge every time it kicked on (ear plugs and my phone's fan app fixed that though). The bathroom was small but workable however, had a heavy door that would never stay open unless a towel was shoved in front of the door. It had a balcony with a view of the river however, the floor board under the doorway to the balcony was all broken/torn up and the actual door handle to the door was also very loose. I was disappointed to find that my room was almost directly across from the elevators, which meant that my afternoon and early evening relaxation time was often disrupted by the sound of all the traffic coming and going mixed with loud talking to each other and the dinging elevator sounds. The staff member checked me in and gave me instructions on how to get to my room (cross the bridge, hold the room key up to the black circle on the elevator, etc.). Thankfully there is free parking in the attached parking garage on the second floor where you can just unload and walk directly into the beautifully decorated lobby. The room was a bit pricey, especially with a random $30 "additional charges" charge (which I regretfully forgot to ask about upon checking in), but it was worth it for my first visit here. I reserved a king room with balcony more than three months prior to my stay. The perfect base for their special caramel drizzle. Overall then you’ve got another decent enough Tekken plot here, but one that possibly doesn’t take quite as many steps forward as I’d like – it’s still a fascinating world filled with likeable characters though, so I certainly can’t complain too much. In a way it’s a little disappointing to see things haven’t evolved much in the 10 years since Tekken 3, but on the flip side it provides some comfort that these characters are the same ones you’ll remember. The central storyline is focused around a handful of characters (including newcomers Alisha and Lars) but each cast member has their own plot, told through a comic book-style scene at the beginning of their story mode and a CGI scene at the end. Many of these harken back to the things established years ago – Nina and Anna are still fighting, Xiaoyu still wants to help Jin but only has her Panda to rely on etc. Tekken has always had a convoluted and nonsensical story centred around family drama mixed in with supernatural elements but things are dialled up to 11 here in a way I wasn’t really expecting – giving Tekken 6 a unique feel that is slightly darker than its predecessors. Still, you can expect to see plenty of Egyptian Gods, warring Mishima family members and the infamous Devil gene here – although admittedly I wasn’t quite as engaged as I had been during previous entries, it’s all interesting enough. The new leader of the Mishima Zaibatsu, Jin Kazama, has declared war with anyone who opposes him which has led to conflicts across the globe and his father, Kazuya Mishima, is leading the G Corporation to oppose him. In order to bring this to a conclusion, Jin declares the sixth King of Iron Fist Tournament in order to defeat Kazuya once and for all, and fighters from around the world re-surface in order to join in the battle. In the world of Tekken 6, things have escalate to a worrying head. Tom Clancy’s XDefiant is a new cross-universe shooter which brings together factions from The Division, Splinter Cell, and Ghost Recon. While most spellcasters follow predictable patterns in their art, there are always exceptions. Magic in Golarion isn't entirely predictable, no matter how many practitioners wish that it was so. A witch's patron or a whimsical deity might grant a favored servant a special power for whatever strange motives such beings might possess. An oracle might grope at a divine power that they poorly understand and cast a spell in a unique manner simply because they were never taught otherwise. A sorcerer might demonstrate aberrant powers in her bloodline magic, hinting at a background more complex than a single eldritch influence acting upon her. This isn't to say that spell tricksters come solely from high academia. The return of New Thassilon brought thousands of magical dabblers and scholars, each with their own unique tricks and each eager to see what new spell variants have developed in their long absence. The Arclords of Nex have spent thousands of years honing spells in both wartime and peace, demonstrating a fine control over the arcane by effortlessly changing their magic to suit their whims. At the Magaambya academy in the Mwangi Expanse, for instance, initiates study multiple traditions of magic, adapting the techniques of harnessing magical essence from one tradition to create new methods of casting spells in another. The magical academies in Golarion have no claim to magic as a whole but can often teach lesser-known variants of a spell to their students. The Fruits of ResearchWhile magic can spring from many sources, from wizard tutors to self-taught savants, the art of the spell trickster often springs from sophisticated magical research. There’s no need to toss them! Blend extra zucchini scraps into hummus, smoothies, creamy zucchini soup, or use it to make the “ricotta” filling in this lasagna recipe. I gently toss them with the other veggies and/or sauce for about a minute over medium heat, just until they’re warmed through. When I make zoodle recipes that also include sautéed veggies, I add the zoodles to the pan right at the end of the cooking time. Don’t! We like our regular pasta with a nice al dente bite, and the same goes for cooking zoodles! It takes a little longer than spiralizing since it’s a more manual process. They all worked perfectly, so my choice is this OXO Good Grips one because it’s just $7. They’re also cheap! I tested out three types so that I could recommend the best one for you ( this one, this one, and this one). Julienned noodles are thinner and straighter than spiralized noodles, but they taste just the same! I love this option because julienne peelers are tiny, so they’ll fit in any drawer. Curly & long, they seem like a natural pasta substitute, but let me tell you – these fresh, vibrant veggie noodles can do so much more than sub in for spaghetti! Nowadays, spiralized zucchini noodles are easy to find at the store, but they’re so much better when freshly cut.
